Senior classes

Whether you’re stepping onto the mat for the first time, getting back into shape, or looking to take your judo further, our adult classes are built for everyone who wants to learn, get fitter, build skills, and join our supportive judo family.

No experience required—just turn up ready to learn, train respectfully, and enjoy the process. You’ll leave stronger, more confident, and feeling right at home in our community.

Training Times:

Tuesday: 19:30 – 21:00 & Thursday: 19:30 – 21:00

We run focused sessions twice a week where our experienced coaches guide you through a broad, high-quality curriculum that covers all core elements of judo.

Every session mixes these key areas for balanced, well-rounded development:

  • Gripping (kumi-kata) — Mastering holds and control to set up attacks effectively.

  • Techniques & Throws (nage-waza) — Developing a wide arsenal of standing throws with precision, power, and timing.

  • Randori — Live, free practice to apply skills under resistance in a safe, progressive way.

  • Newaza (groundwork) — Building strong pins, escapes, transitions, strangles (shime-waza), and armlocks (kansetsu-waza) for complete control on the ground.

We push technical excellence and competitive standards—members develop advanced throws, deep groundwork knowledge, and tactical awareness that holds up in grading, shiai, or just personal bests. Our coaching focuses on precision and progression, helping you build real skill and confidence step by step.

Our club is proudly inclusive:

Some members train purely for recreation—fitness, fun, stress relief, self-defense, and the social side.

Others compete at national level and beyond, chasing medals and rankings.

No matter your goal, we support you fully. Our coaches tailor feedback, progress you at the right pace, and celebrate every milestone—whether that’s nailing your first clean ippon throw or stepping onto the British podium. It’s about fulfilling your potential, building confidence and resilience, both on and off the mat.

Come as you are—no need to buy anything upfront! For your first class:

  • Wear comfortable athletic clothing: a plain t-shirt (or rash guard) and loose shorts/leggings/track pants (no zips, buttons, belts, or hard parts that could snag).
  •
  • Bring clean indoor-only flip-flops or slides to wear off the mat (we train barefoot on clean mats).
  • A water bottle is a good idea—training gets intense!
  •
  • Remove all jewellery, keep nails short, and arrive with a positive attitude.

We can often provide a loaner judo gi (uniform) if you want to try one, or just train in your kit for the first few sessions while you decide if it’s for you.

Not right away—most clubs (including ours) let you try a few sessions (typically 1–4 free or low-commitment tasters) before requiring British Judo Association (BJA) membership.

Once you’re hooked and want to continue regularly, grade, or compete, you’ll need a valid BJA licence for insurance, official recognition, and access to events. It’s straightforward to apply online via the BJA site—we can guide you through it. Introductory/short-term options are available if you’re just testing the waters.

Got more? Drop us a message via the contact form, or just turn up to a Tuesday/Thursday session and chat with the coaches. We’re a friendly bunch and happy to answer anything—whether it’s about fees, gradings, or what a typical evening feels like.

Build Fitness & Strength

Judo is a fantastic full-body workout that builds real strength, stamina, and overall fitness in a fun, varied way. Through dynamic movements, drills, and partner work, you'll improve your cardiovascular health, core power, and endurance—without it ever feeling like a chore. Many members notice they feel fitter and more energized in everyday life after just a few weeks.

Protect yourself

Develop practical knowledge and skills to defend yourself effectively, all in a safe, controlled environment. Judo boosts your physical coordination and mental sharpness while building confidence, discipline, focus, and resilience—valuable tools that carry over into daily life, helping you feel more secure and capable.

Earn your Belt

Set clear goals and track your progress as you master new skills and techniques. Gradings provide rewarding milestones along the journey, celebrating your achievements with official belt promotions and a sense of accomplishment. Whether you're aiming for your first coloured belt or higher ranks, it's about steady personal growth and the satisfaction of earning it through effort and improvement.

Meet new friends

Join a friendly, welcoming community of like-minded people who share interests in self-improvement, fitness, and personal growth. You'll form strong bonds through shared training, encouragement on the mat, and the mutual respect that defines judo. Many members build lifelong friendships here—newcomers often say they feel part of the group from day one.
