This weekend we proudly hosted North West Judo — with safeguarding and first aid courses, the regional AGM, the new Dan Grade syllabus guidance, and an inspiring masterclass from Paralympic Champion Christopher Hunt Skelly MBE. 💥

It was fantastic to welcome so many from the wider judo family, many visiting our dojo for the very first time. Thank you for coming and for all your kind words — it was a pleasure to share our space and the spirit of judo with you.

A huge well done to Mya and Claudia who both stepped up to compete recently!

For 5-year-old Claudia, it was her first ever competition—and she showed incredible bravery, focus and spirit (and loved every minute). Big sister Mya led by example, supporting her all the way and showing what true leadership and encouragement look like.

At Leigh Judo Club, we believe in more than just medals. It’s about confidence, courage, and growing together—on and off the mat.

A fantastic effort from our athletes at the Yorkshire & Humberside Championships — not just in performance, but in the way they supported each other throughout the day.

Frank showed real determination with double gold, taking on bigger, older opponents with focus and courage.
Ryan, Aras, and Ethan also came home with well-deserved medals, including an all-Leigh final between Ryan and Aras! 💥🥇🥇🥇🥈🥈

We had a brilliant Kata day on the mats for our recent Kata Course at the club, led by the excellent Mike Bygate.
We focused on Goshin Jutsu, the self-defence kata, and it was a fantastic opportunity to deepen our understanding and sharpen our skills.

Great energy, great learning, and a great reminder of how much there is always to develop in Judo.
Thanks to Mike and everyone who came along and made it such an enjoyable session!

It was a quiet, focused session with the seniors this week. We worked on gripping strategy, with a focus on defensive grips and counters from the belt grip, before finishing with some randori.

Sometimes, the most valuable progress happens in the quieter sessions—refining technique, sharpening reactions, and building a deeper understanding of movement. Well done to everyone who put the work in! 💪🥋

Building strong posture and balance isn’t just important for judo—it helps develop confidence, coordination, and resilience that carry over into everyday life. Learning to stay strong under pressure, adapt, and escape tough situations are skills that go beyond the mat. Great effort from everyone—keep up the hard work! 💪🥋

A good session on the mat last night! The juniors worked on Ko Uchi / O Uchi combinations, building confidence in their movement and control, with plenty of fun and games to finish.

The seniors continued refining sacrifices and counters, focusing on Tai Otoshi and BIG Ura Nage—some powerful judo on display!

Special mention to @palo.mbellabrian, who came to train but stepped up to support and guide our new beginners. This is judo—helping each other grow, passing on knowledge, and creating a stronger community. Respect, learning, and support—on and off the mat. Well done, everyone! 💪🥋
