Gradings

Grading is an important part of a judoka’s journey. It gives you clear goals to work towards, recognises your development and provides a record of the skills you have achieved.
At Leigh Judo Club, members can progress through our own grading system using our technical syllabus. Our coaches assess your development, award your grade and provide a certificate to recognise your achievement.
If you want to compete or have your grade formally recognised by the National Governing Body, you can choose to take a British Judo grading instead. This requires a current British Judo licence.
Recognise Tour Achievement
Work towards your next grade and develop your technical knowledge, skills and understanding. Each grading gives you a clear milestone and a formal record of the progress you have made.
Choose Your Path
Grade through the club for recreational judo, or take a British Judo grading if you want an NGB-recognised grade or plan to compete.

Your grading journey progress achievement

Grading is about more than changing the colour of your belt. It gives you something to work towards and provides a structured way to develop your judo, from learning the fundamentals through to applying more advanced techniques.

Our grading syllabus follows the same technical requirements used by British Judo. For members who train recreationally, our internal grading system provides a straightforward way to progress through the grades without needing a British Judo licence. Your grade is awarded by our coaching team and you receive a certificate recognising your achievement.

For judoka who want to compete or have their grade recognised by British Judo, we can also support you through the British Judo grading pathway. A current British Judo licence is required for this route and for participation in British Judo competitions.
